The sacrament fomerly was called "Extreme Unction". Unction means " the act of anointing" and was given in extreme danger of death, using sacred oil of the sick.
Now it is called the "Anointing of the Sick" and is meant for anyone seriously ill or weakened elderly or facing serious surgery. "Extreme Unction" seemed to imply imminent death and people feared it.
The sacrament cleanses the person of their sins.
