There is no 'special' format for a letter to an editor all you need to do is write. just write. Every editor is used to seeing all manner of styles, good and bad, so don't worry.

One common format followed is however:

Date

Address [If applicable]

Header

Body of the letter

Closer

Signature

Here is an example:

1/1/03 [Current date]

100 Street, City, State, zip code (What ever amount you desire to disclose)

To whom this may concern, [Header]

In this portion of the letter you address whatever you wish to bring up in your letter. In most situations there is no need for an indentation, however it is up to the personal preference of the sender.

You can include multiple paragraphs in the body, however this isn't necessary. Generally if you include multiple paragraphs they are used to signify a change in what subject you are addressing. Again there is no need for indentation. After you have addressed all that you wish to bring up you move onto the next section the closer. [Body]

Closing line (Sincerely, regards, sincerely yours, cordially, cordially yours, respectfully yours, ect.), [Closer]

Your signature or printed name [Signature]

The best thing to do is to read letters to the editor that are published in the paper you are interested in. Do this for several weeks. Not only will you get an idea of what types of letters people are writing, but you will see what types of letters the editor is accepting. You will also see letters that have been professionally edited. They will be the best examples to follow. i think it is necessary to keep the letter short, simple and to the point . One must use short, striking,to the point senteces.... it is even essential to start the letter with dear sir/sir and end it with yours faithfully.

These tips about writing a Letter to the Editor is taken from the Letter to the editor site publishaletter.com.

= How to write a letter to the editor =

Writing a letter to the editor is a great way to share your opinion on articles, reports or editorials published in a newspaper or magazine. Whether the issues are local or national in scope, the editors are looking for timely, well thought out responses to what appears in their publications. Some newspapers literally receive thousands of letters a day. To improve your chances of getting published here are a few tips that you may find helpful.

* Make reference to the subject

Mention the article or the editorial.

* Keep the letter focused

Gather your thoughts and keep it on one subject. Too many points will reduce the impact * Make it stand on its own

It should make sense to people that have not read the original article * Keep it original

Publications want original submissions. So, no mass mailings. If you believe your letter is likely to be printed, you may choose the seven day delay option for posting on this site. * Make it general and prose only

Do not send poetry, thank you or other correspondence of a personal nature. * Keep it short

Most publications limit the letters to 150 to 250 words

* Make it quick

News goes stale very quickly. So submit your letter as quickly as possible. * No attachments.

Most publications do not allow attached documents

* Mention credentials. * If you have relevant job title, unique experience or expertise, mention it. * Include your full contact information

Most newspapers and magazines, if they are to print your letter, will contact you before publication to verify information and discuss content. Without your contact information it is extremely unlikely that your letter will be printed. Publishaletter.com

They're used to a variety of formats.

You will at the least wish your full name, address and telephone number to be included.

Sample 1:

Dear Editor,

I'm writing about Bond Issue X for the Pleasantville School Board's proposal A. I think it smacks of communism and is the opening wedge for the type of totalitarianism that our brave troops are fighting abroad!

Please, everyone needs to vote against this, so that the light of freedom does not go out right in our back yard!

Sincerely,

John Birch

123 Patriot Lane

Pleasantville, Nebraska

555-1234

Sample 2:

To: The Editor

From: Mary Steinberg-Hernandez

321 Susan B. Anthony Memorial Drive

Pleasantville, Nebraska

Date: April 4, 2010

Ref: Wymyn's Studies Center

Sir or Ma'am:

The Bond Issue X is coming up, to raise money for the essentially needed Wymyn's Studies Center for our local community college. It is the one thing that can hold back the reactionary phallocentric forces that threaten to take away the hard won rights of all wymyn!

Please, everyone needs to vote for this, so that the light of freedom does not go out right in our back yard!

Sincerely,
