Tennessee and Missouri have eight bordering states! I'm as impressed as you. Starting from the north and moving clockwise, Tennessee borders Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri. Missouri borders Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Now we both know!
Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana border the Mississippi River, but it depends where you consider the Mississippi starting. Some say Minnesota is on the Mississippi too.
If you travel northeast from Arkansas you would be in Missouri or Kentucky. Arkansas borders Louisiana to the south, Texas to the southwest, Oklahoma to the west, Missouri to the north, as well as Tennessee and Mississippi on the east.

Seven states, Start in Virginia or North Carolina and go through Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and California
It is impossible to say without knowing the starting point. For example, if you start in Oklahoma, you don't have to go through any other states. If you start in Tennessee, you have to go through Arkansas. Etc.
