Octopuses are the most intellectual marine animals. They can memorize, mimic and solve problems in labs. There have been many cases in which octopuses escaped from their tanks. To answer your question correctly, the scientific name of the common octopus is Octopus vulgaris.

The Blue-ringed Octopus is the common named for three or four small octopus species of the genus Hapalochlaena. They live in tide pools in the Pacific Ocean, from Japan to Australia and are currently considered to be the world's most venomous animal. There are three confirmed species in the genus Hapalochlaena, but a forth is still under research and is a relatively new discovery. The names of these species, with scientific names are as follows:

  • Greater Blue-ringed Octopus - Scientific name: Hapalochlaena lunulata
  • Southern Blue-ringed Octopus (also known as the Lesser Blue-ringed Octopus) - Scientific name: Hapalochlaena maculosa
  • Blue-lined Octopus - Scientific name: Hapalochlaena fasciata

This fourth species, Hapalochlaena nierstraszi, is yet to be confirmed as a member of this genus and research is still continuing. It has been described from a single specimen found on the Bay of Bengal in 1938, but the validity of its taxon is still questioned.
