You need to open bleeder and compress the piston back with a large channelock pliers/ C-clamp and use some force. Probably some corrision in bore causing the piston to hang up. Good luck.

AnswerThis is not quite right. On mine, anyway, there is a 14mm hex-head close to the 14mm hex-head that retains the handbrake cable on the back of the caliper. You need to remove this 14mm hex head, not the one that holds on the cable, and inside is an adjuster with an Allen head-- 6mm I think. You need to back this out as far as it will go. There is NO NEED to use force or unscrew the bleed nipple. You'll have to readjaust the handbrake later either by the time-honoured method or screwing in the little adjuster. AnswerThe above procedure is the same for a Mazda MX5 mark 2 (1.6). The only difference is that the Allen screw behind the 14mm hex-head is 4mm. AnswerThe best way is to use the Allen key adjuster to retract the cylinder , no force necessary , no bleeding etc . Its easy that way AnswerIt could also be possible that the piston needs to be rotated clockwise to allow it retract. This is due to the self adjusters. This can be done with the CORRECT tool ( about £20) or with a pair of water pump pliers ( not the best, but when noting else will do!). AnswerCaliper pistons on rear disc brakes rotate to retract. If you use any tool to press them back in as you would on from disc brakes, you will damage the calipers and possibly the tool.

Wind the piston back on a brake caliper?

If you are wanting to colaspe the piston so you can fit new pads in the caliper, first open the master cylinder, then use a "c" clamp or "c" clamp vise grips to slowly push the piston back enough to place the pads in and then fit caliper over your rotor.Keep in mind there may be a mess at the master cylinder.

On a 1994 Miata rear caliper when you back off the adjuster gear the piston does not retract you even removed the adjusting gear and tried a C-Clamp with no luck Do you have to buy a new caliper?

The rear calipers have a small screw that prevents the caliper from being pressed back into place. If you look on the inside of the caliper (towards the body), you should see a small, 10-12mm brass bolt. Remove it, and underneath, you will find a small Allen-head screw. If you unscrew it, it will allow the caliper to be retracted. Once you've retracted it enough, *lightly* screw the Allen screw back in until it stops. The moment you feel resistance, is enough pressure.

How do you retract rear brake piston from 1998 Honda prelude sh?

You need to turn (screw, rotate) the piston clockwise in the caliper a large number of times to make it fully retract. You can insert some kind of tool into the indentations in the face of the piston, or grip the very top edge of the piston with pliers in order to turn it. It has to be fully retracted to allow enough space for "new" pads to be installed.

How do you change front brakes and rotors on a 1997 Saturn SL2?

http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/19/ac/f0/0900823d8019acf0.jsp If you are changing the pads only, (which I did last night) you can remove just the top caliper lock pin and then flip it out pop out the pads, compress the caliper piston (with a C clamp, or with some channel lock pliers that are long enough to fit over the caliper cylinder assembly) and the pop in the new pads, flip the caliper back up and tighten the pin back in. Took me 15 mins each side of the car including wheel removal :)

You can't compress the piston on your 1992 olds Cutlass S?

AnswerThere is not enough information in your question. A cylinder piston you do not compress, you compress the rings in the piston. There are pistons in the brake system. There is no way of knowing the problem without being more specific.I'm assuming you mean the caliper piston. If it can't be compressed, replace the caliper.

How do you compress piston caliper to put new rotor on 99 Nissan maxima?

you can use a C clamp and squeeze the cylinder down and then your brake shoes should be far apart enough to just fit on the rotor.

How do you get the brake caliper off of a 1995 aerostar van to change the brakes?

Use a large C- clamp to depress the piston enough to remove the caliper.

How do you compress caliper piston 2006 Kia Spectra rear brake?

Get a 4 Inch C Clamp Leave the Pad In The Caliper On The Plunger Side Open The Clamp Wide enough To Clamp on The Back Of Caliper and Pad. It should Easily compress. However, as these are rear disc, the emergency brake is connected as well. A C clamp will not work in this situation because the piston caliper is threaded and has to be retracted by turning the piston caliper with a special tool that can be gotten at most auto parts for around 10-15 dollars. Make sure the cap is off the master cylinder reservoir. Not difficult.

How can you compress the caliper cylinder to install new rear disc pads on a 1986 Honda Prelude?

Go buy a big c-clamp at autozone, advance or you can usually find them at a flea market. Now they do also have at autozone or advance what they call a caliper cylinder tool that compresses the caliper. But if you use a c-clamp, the first thing you want to do is take your master cylinder cap off. That way when the c-clamp is pushing the cylinder in ,the brake fluid will push back to the master cylinder .that way you want have to bleed the brakes. To compress the caliper with the c-clamp open it up wide enough for the one end that's opposite from the threaded handle on the c-clamp to fit on the outside of the caliper. While holding the c-clamp in place on the outside of caliper, take and turn the end with the handle on the c-clamp clockwise until it touches the inside of the cylinder .you will feel the handle get a little hard to turn . (slowly) keep turning the handle clockwise until the rubber boot around the cylinder is almost completely compressed all the way in. Now you should have enough clearance to put your rear disc pads on. Two more things, when you finish putting pads on both sides, don't forget to put your master cylinder cap on before you mash your brake pedal. The last thing is mash your pedal real slow until you get a firm pedal . Your pedal will probably go all the way to the floor when you first mash it . This is normal. Keep slowly pushing your pedal down til it gets firm. Good luck & i hoped this info. Helped.

How do you get front brake pads off a 1998 Chevy Prizm?

First remove tire to access brake caliper once this is done then look for the 2 bolts holding caliper to housing loose and get bolts to recess into caliper assembly .Once the bolts are recessed enough use a pry tool to remove caliper from housing and disc assembly. using a 4" or greater "C" clamp recess the caliper pistons (using the old inside brake pad). Slooowly push piston into caliper housing remove old pads install new pads. making sure not to twist brake hoses. Also at this time you may want to remove caliper cage assembly to remove front disc to be resurfaced (it may need to be replaced thedisc that is once this determination is made reassemble in reverse order. Oh,my bad I forgot to tell you to remove master cylinder cap to allow fluid to return to cylinder some time prior to removing caliper.

You are changing the rear disc brakes on a 1994 Chevy lumina the caliper piston will not screw in so you have enough room to put the new pads on Is there a trick to this that you are unaware of Thanks?

When you are changing disc brake pads, you should use one of the old pads and a large clamp to compress the piston immediately after removing the caliper. This helps to prevent air from entering the brake lines.Use caution when positioning the clamp so that it does not put any pressure on the brake hose, bleeder valve, or anything other than the piston housing. If the piston is difficult to compress, you may have a frozen caliper and/or a leaky brake hose.

'How do you change front brake pads on a 1995 buick century'?

Remove wheel. Use a big C clamp to push against the outboard pad a bit to retract the caliper piston a little. Remove the two caliper bolts (1/2 inch head, top and bottom, on the inboard side. Pull the caliper off, remove the pads and tie it up out of the way. Leave the brake line hose connected. Check the master cylinder reservoir for enough capacity to force some brake fluid back up into it. If it's full, remove some. Replace the cap. Use the C clamp to push the piston all the way down until it bottoms out in its bore. You can have the rotor resurfaced or replace it, but if it looks in good condition, this is not essential. Put new pads in the caliper. Use some caliper grease on the back of the pads to prevent squeaking. Also put caliper grease on the inside of the rubber boots on the back that cover the ends of the bushings the caliper bolts go through. You want grease on the outside of the bushings, between them and the caliper body, so that the caliper can move inboard and outboard to center itself over the rotor and the pads wear evenly. Reassemble. Pump brakes before starting on a test drive.
