You need to open bleeder and compress the piston back with a large channelock pliers/ C-clamp and use some force. Probably some corrision in bore causing the piston to hang up. Good luck.
AnswerThis is not quite right. On mine, anyway, there is a 14mm hex-head close to the 14mm hex-head that retains the handbrake cable on the back of the caliper. You need to remove this 14mm hex head, not the one that holds on the cable, and inside is an adjuster with an Allen head-- 6mm I think. You need to back this out as far as it will go. There is NO NEED to use force or unscrew the bleed nipple. You'll have to readjaust the handbrake later either by the time-honoured method or screwing in the little adjuster. AnswerThe above procedure is the same for a Mazda MX5 mark 2 (1.6). The only difference is that the Allen screw behind the 14mm hex-head is 4mm. If you are wanting to colaspe the piston so you can fit new pads in the caliper, first open the master cylinder, then use a "c" clamp or "c" clamp vise grips to slowly push the piston back enough to place the pads in and then fit caliper over your rotor.Keep in mind there may be a mess at the master cylinder.

The rear calipers have a small screw that prevents the caliper from being pressed back into place. If you look on the inside of the caliper (towards the body), you should see a small, 10-12mm brass bolt. Remove it, and underneath, you will find a small Allen-head screw. If you unscrew it, it will allow the caliper to be retracted. Once you've retracted it enough, *lightly* screw the Allen screw back in until it stops. The moment you feel resistance, is enough pressure.

Took me 15 mins each side of the car including wheel removal :)

Go buy a big c-clamp at autozone, advance or you can usually find them at a flea market. Now they do also have at autozone or advance what they call a caliper cylinder tool that compresses the caliper. But if you use a c-clamp, the first thing you want to do is take your master cylinder cap off. That way when the c-clamp is pushing the cylinder in ,the brake fluid will push back to the master cylinder .that way you want have to bleed the brakes. To compress the caliper with the c-clamp open it up wide enough for the one end that's opposite from the threaded handle on the c-clamp to fit on the outside of the caliper. While holding the c-clamp in place on the outside of caliper, take and turn the end with the handle on the c-clamp clockwise until it touches the inside of the cylinder .you will feel the handle get a little hard to turn . (slowly) keep turning the handle clockwise until the rubber boot around the cylinder is almost completely compressed all the way in. Now you should have enough clearance to put your rear disc pads on. Two more things, when you finish putting pads on both sides, don't forget to put your master cylinder cap on before you mash your brake pedal. The last thing is mash your pedal real slow until you get a firm pedal . Your pedal will probably go all the way to the floor when you first mash it . This is normal. Check the master cylinder reservoir for enough capacity to force some brake fluid back up into it. If it's full, remove some. Replace the cap. Use the C clamp to push the piston all the way down until it bottoms out in its bore. You can have the rotor resurfaced or replace it, but if it looks in good condition, this is not essential. Put new pads in the caliper. Use some caliper grease on the back of the pads to prevent squeaking. Also put caliper grease on the inside of the rubber boots on the back that cover the ends of the bushings the caliper bolts go through. You want grease on the outside of the bushings, between them and the caliper body, so that the caliper can move inboard and outboard to center itself over the rotor and the pads wear evenly. Reassemble. Pump brakes before starting on a test drive.
