RTF files or Rich Text Format - can be read by most word processors. It retains the layout of a document (centred text and indents for example) but not text formatting (bold, italics etc)
It's useful if, for example, you need to send your CV to a company without knowing which word-processor they're using.
If the file location is the subject of the letter or of some other significance to the content of the letter, it should be part of the 'reference line', just under the inside address, just above the salutation. If the file location is a code for the sender's own files, the code belongs at the bottom left, several spaces below the typed name of the sender, the 'copy' notation, or the 'enclosures' notation, whichever is last.

rtf file is used over a doc file when the receiver does not have the same version of software as yours. If the receiver has the same version of software as yours then doc file is ok to send as the receiver will be able to open it. If you do not know what version the receiver has then send rtf file as any one either having a old or new version will be able to open an rtf file

put it in a rar, then password that. Or make it an sfx archive and use that as an exe instead, using Winrar. MS Word 2003 implements an RTF version that supports passwords, so it's possible. (The old trick of saving a Word doc as RTF to bypass protection no longer works.) But even their 1.8 RTF spec (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ac57de32-17f0-4b46-9e4e-467ef9bc5540&displaylang=en) still says "Also, there is currently no method for storing passwords in RTF, so...".
.doc refers to a word document .rtf refers to rich text format the .rtf extension was an enhancement of the .txt (Notepad) which was available in initial versions of windows. in rtf format you can form text styles like bold italics etc but advanced text editing and formatting was not supported by .rtf the word document provides us a lot of features that the rtf does not.
