Prior to their writing down, the laws were held in the minds of the Roman aristocracy, and lesser people (plebs) had to go to a aristocrats (patricians) to get help. This made them clients of the aristocrat, who became their patron, and used them to maintain their own status and influence. After the writing down of the laws, the middle class was able to work out their situation and so gained a basis for a degree of self-decision. This resulted in the middle class progressively gaining power, and after the civil wars, the remaining patricians faded into obscurity as an honorific title.
