Mount Wycheproof, north-western Victoria, Australia, rises a majestic 43 metres (140 ft) above the surrounding countryside.

The Aboriginal "witchi-poorp" (grass on a hill) is probably a more accurate description.

Some hundred-plus kilometres to the south, Mount Cotterell, at almost 100 metres, is a giant amoug grassy hills.

The answers above are interesting, but incorrect. The smallest mountain would be one which is exactly 1,000 meters high. This is the scientific definition of a mountain, equivalent to just over 3,300 feet.

That's very tricky to answer. When is a raised piece of land a mountain and when is it a hill? There is no definition in South Africa which will allow any meaningful answer.

There are parts of South Africa that are pretty rugged, and have some deep valleys and steep high places that in a flatter country might rate as mountains, but in South Africa its just a big hill or a ridge or a 'koppie' (inselberg)
