The snow line on a mountain is the elevation where the mountain begins to be covered in snow. e.g. If there is no snow at 900 feet of elevation and there is snow at 1000 feet, the snow line is at 1000 feet. This elevation is expressed in feet above mean sea level.

No, the snow level varies from place to place around the world, depending on local climate.

*** == The lower altitudinal boundary of a snow-covered area, especially of one that is perennially covered, such as the snowcap of a mountain.

On the Rocky Mountains and related ranges, the permanent snow line falls from around 17,000 feet (5,200 metres) in New Mexico

to around 8,000 feet or 2,400 metres or less in the north around Alberta.

In the geologically related Brooks Range, extreme aridity means that despite the severe cold (which is reduced by temperature inversions throughout the winter) the permanent snow line is only marginally lower than in Alberta at around 7,000 feet or 2,100 metres. In Colorado and Wyoming, permanent snow lines are typically around 11,000 feet (3,350 metres), whilst in Montana it averages around 9,800 feet or 3,000 metres with a steady latitudinal decline.

The most southerly snow line figures are estimates becauseno modern glaciersexistanywhere in New Mexico. Indeed, as Thomas R. Van Devender has shown in his study of ice-age New Mexico, no Pleistocene glaciation occurred in the southern part of New Mexico even on peaks reaching 10,000 feet (3,400 metres). Because of the aridity, the probable snow line in most of New Mexico is higher than observed on the glaciated tropical volcanoes (Iztaccihuatl, Popocatépetl and Pico de Orizaba) that possess the only modern glaciers in Central America.

The snow line is the elevation at which snow remains on a mountain year-round. The elevation varies with latitude - the further away from the equator you get, the lower the elevation.
