The climate, soil, water, and location along the Atlantic Ocean makes the Carolinas an ideal place to grow diverse crops. When the colonies were first established, proprietors secured the charters from the King of England but Native Americans had been great stewards of the land. The colonists, in fact, had to rely on the knowledge of Native Americans to plan the use of their charter. Among the known cash crops considered were tabacco, indigo, and rice. A rice crop is very interesting because althought Native Americans had harvested wild rice--rice they way the proprietors envisioned it would require labor intensive workforce. The Portuguese slave traders had a ready answer and provided Africans from their east coast knlwdegeable with growing rice due to their ancient trade with China.
