With an exhaustive internet search lasting literally seconds, I found that the refractive index
of air at sea level is 1.000293 . That was just what I was looking for. It tells us that the speed
of light in sea-level air is (speed of light in vacuum) / (1.000293) .

(186,282.397) / (1.000293) = 186,227.8 miles per second .

What is the speed of light in the air?

Speed of light and speed of sound?

Speed of light in vacuum is a constant which is denoted by c and is 1,86,000 miles/sec or 299,792,458 meters/second. In dry air at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius speed of sound is 343 meters/second.

What is the value velocity of light?

The speed of all types of electromagnetic radiation, including light, in vacuum, is: -- 299,792,458 meters per second -- 186,282 miles per second. In material media, such as air or water, it's slightly less, and depends on the substance.

Light travels at what speed per inch?

The speed of light is about 300,000 miles per second in a vacuum. In air, it is about 90 kilometers per second slower. Group velocity experiments back it up.

What is the ratio of speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of sound in air?

In a rough, round figure? 930,000 to 1. Sound travels roughly 1/5 of a mile per second in air. Light travels 186,000 miles per second in a vacuum. In five seconds sound travels one mile. In five seconds, light travels 930,000 miles in a vacuum.

Speed of light in gas and air at sea level?

Slightly less than 186,000 miles per second, or 300,000 kilometres per second. Light doesn't really slow much in air or gas, it is slowed by glass.

Does light or sound travel faster in air?

Light travels almost a million times faster in air. There is very little difference between the speed of light in a vacuum as in air. It is around 0.01% slower in air. Because of the difference between the speed of light and sound you can estimate the distance of a lightning strike. For every 3 seconds between the flash and the sound of thunder the lightning strike is 1 km away or 5 seconds for a mile. The actual speeds are light 300,000 km per second speed of sound 0.33 km per second.

How fast does lightyear go?

In space or in air, light covers about 186,000 miles (300,000 km) every second."Light year" is a distance ... the distance light covers in a year, at that speed.

What is speed of light in air?

Speed of light in air: 298,925,574 meters per second.Speed of light in a vacuum: 299,792,458 meters per second.

The speed of light and the speed of sound?

The speed of air at 20 degrees Celsius is 343 meters per second. The speed of light is 299 792 458 meters per second.

What is the average light speed when light beam emerges from water into air?

The speed of light in air is approx 299,700,000 metres per second. This is not very different from its maximum speed which is its speed in vacuum: 299,792,458 metres per second. The fact that the beam emerges from water is irrelevant.
