4 inches There is no "AVERAGE" per-se however, 30 to 36 inches high and 6 to 10 inches in front of the toilet works well. These measurements are to centerline of the roll. There are limits prescribed for ADA accessible stalls that say that the bottom of the dispenser can not be located lower than 15 inches nor higher than 48 inches above the floor and 7 to 9 inches in front of the toilet measured from the centerline of the dispenser. It is always best to verify CODE SPECIFIC information with your local Building Official and/or Building Department as local laws and codes do tend to vary somewhat from jurisdiction (town) to jurisdiction (town). There is no set size for a roll of toilet paper. Rolls can be 3 inches to 4 inches tall depending on the manufacturer. Not only does height differ, but diameter also varies greatly.
It depends on the size of the roll,
A toilet paper roll will vary depending on toilet paper thickness and how many pieces are on a roll. The average length is 4 to 5 feet long.
There are anywhere from 350 to 500 sheets of toilet paper on one roll
I've counted - it had 159 pieces
I would say within arms reach of the toilet. preferably on the right side. No. If the toilet is near the corner of the room, then the wall that the toilet ISNT laying against is the place for the toilet paper roll. I prefer not to put a toilet paper roll across from the toilet. It annoys me.... i say why don't you put the toilet paper in the bathroom that's were it belongs anyway
one roll of toilet paper uses about 0.8 pounds of water
The standard placement is 20 - 24 inches from the floor up to the center of the TP holder. New toilet configuration these days my be several inches higher than the old standard toilet. If you have a newer toilet, adjust accordingly.
toilet paper holder
36 inches max from rear wall to furthest edge of dispenser. 19 inches minimum above finished floor to center of roll.
Next to the toilet generally, could you be more specific? toilet paper dispensers

a toilet roll is 'un rouleau de papier toilette' toilet paper is 'du papier-toilette'
It is preferable if the toilet roll holder is placed within the toilet itself. Usually it is within reach of the person using the toilet.

I would install a toilet roll holder around 18" up off the floor. It should be around the height of your legs (or a bit higher) when sitting on the 'ol throne.
You can recycle the cardboard roll from the toilet paper just as you can recycle the cardboard rolls of paper towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, etc., as long as the roll is cardboard.
You don't have to, but hamsters love to chew on them. As long as there is no actual toilet paper left on the roll that they could choke on, it should not be a problem.
