Answer- Pip: The story of Olive. I'm not certain that this is the book you are talking about, but it is basicly about a girl who imagines she has an identical twin sister, her alter ego. But while she imagines that it is Pip who does all of these things she would never do, it is actually her, being Pip. Once Olive finds friends however Pip goes away. I can't remember if she really did have a twin sister, that had died, but this book does sound quite similar.
