The word's orgins are Greek and you have it right, it literally means Crypto-Hidden, and Zoology-The study of animals. It is the study, and search for animals not in the excepted range of study, or formal catalogs of discovered creatures. It has mainly two different fields or areas of research. One is the search for "living" examples of animals that can be identified through fossils etc, which are believed to be extinct today. The second, is the search for those creatures which only have rumors or anecdotal evidence left, through myths, legends, (both world and local) or undocumented sightings.
