My own understanding of demons is that they are also called devils, those spirits cast out of heaven for rebellion (See Rev. 12: 7-9;). Demonism is belief in demons; a demoniac is one thought to be possessed of an evil spirit.
There is no symbolic meaning to demons though many organizations practicing the worship of demons and their leader Satan, will no doubt have their secret signs to identify each other.
As followers of Satan, who is Perdition, they are sons of perdition. They were cast down from heaven and denied physical bodies, a fact which causes them to seek habitation in the bodies of other persons.

baphomet gets its goatlike appearance from a particular event that occured in The Bible. The outcast of the unholy goat. This is from Leviticus 16:20-22. Here it is as written in the New International Version...
