Tappet setting refers to the adjustment of the clearance or gap between the tappet and the valve stem in an engine. It is an important maintenance task that ensures proper engine performance and can help prevent issues such as valve noise or poor engine operation. IIRC Volkswagen originally called for .004 intake and .006 exhaust on that engine. John Muir, who wrote "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive," always recommended setting both valves to .006, and VW eventually agreed.
Both the 1.5 & 1.6 Ltr. engines use "Hydraulic Valve Lash Compensators" No tappet settings are provided.
