An engine might sound like a diesel at operating temperature if the engine was a diesel or if there was an issue with the manifold. Sometimes gases escaping the manifold cover could cause the engine to sound different.
The main difference between diesel motors and petrol motors is in how the fuel is ignited. Gas engines use spark plugs to ignite slightly compressed fuel molecules. Diesel motors use extreme heat and compression to cause the fuel to ignite. For example a petrol engine may have an 8-1 compression ratio and a temp. of 5,000 degrees in the combustion chamer a diesel engine will have a 15-1 ratio and around 15-20,000 degree combustion chamber give or take depending on the engine design. In the end there not that diffrent.
Actually in CI engine,we use Diesel as a fuel and diesel burn at lower temp than petrol and also at constant temp, so for obtaining desirable temp we are working at constant pressure. And inject the fuel on compressed air at constant pressure.

If there is adulteration in diesel, you will gt late throttle response. There will be ignition delay. A good diesel gives wafer crisp power delivery & quick throttle response. Good quality diesel gives excellent low end torque & strong pulling power from lower RPM. As per obsevation of Multijet engine of FIAT :- In multijet engine, good quality diesel burns with clattery sound on idle. In multijet engine ,at cold start ,Adulterated diesel gives diesel clatter but diesel clattter disappears when engine goes to operating temp. In multijet engine at full operating temperature diesel clatter disappears & engine revs like petrol engine without sound of diesel clatter.
Because , petrol is ignited before or on reaching the dead center at low temparature. But diesel burns at high temp also that's why petrol is not sufficient to diesel engines.
petrol engine - Fuel and air mixtures together and compressed in engine. These mixtures ignited by Spark plug Diesel Engine - Air only compressed at high pressure and Temperature. Fuel injected at high temp so that the ignition takes place

Just due to the heat of Compression. The fuel is Injected at a point where the air temp is high enough the fuel burns.
