The political spectrum is where parties are placed based on their policies. For example you can have right-wing or left-wing political parties. Communism and socialism are to the far left whereas fascism and conservatism is to the far right.
The political spectrum is a term for a range of political ideas from different parties. It is used for the majority parties. The ideas to the left are called "Liberal" and also, Democratic ideas. the ideas to the right are called "Conservative" and also, Republican ideas.

The term "parties" I must believe is meant to be "Who were the participants in the Civil Ar?" The US Civil War was fought between the Confederate States of America and the United States. In terms of political parties, in the North the two major parties were the Democrat & Republican parties.
Political parties are large groups of individuals with common interests or opinions who form into a single coalition in order to elect slates of candidates who favor their viewpoint. They are important because, by banding together in a party, people have greater ability to influence the actions of government and make their voice heard during elections. Many people who are critical of the concept of political parties cite an increase in partisanship, a term that denotes the tendency of party members to support only their own side of the political aisle rather than thinking about the greater good of the whole nation. However, for better or for worse, political parties are a feature of virtually every free political system and are widely seen as the inevitable result of democratic governance.
This term refers to a political system in which there are more than two strong parties, unlike the US which has a two-party system.
Short term they take votes away from one of the political parties more than from the other. Long term the party losing votes may react by accepting some of the core positions of the upstart party in order to get rid of them.
