The autobiography takes place in the time of slavery. Zora, a child, doesn't understand slavery. Zora attends a school where white children go. Zora is interested on what clothes they wear, how their fingertips are pink, and why they drive cars. Zora fits in the school because she can read without messing up a word. She loves reading The Bible. Every night her grandma cleans her to be squeaky clean for school the next morning.
