12mm x 1.50
Take the knob with you to a hardware store, and find a metric bolt that will screw into the knob. This would be the easiest way.

Not enough information. Will the car shift gears with the engine off? Is the gear shifter stuck in one particular gear?
if its like other VW's, push down and then shift LIKE going to 1st gear, but its in reverse..
i can not shift my 2000 v w beetle into any gear. I stopped for fuel, when I start out again the trans slipped out of gear, and now will not go into any gear. did the transmission linkage come loose, or what may have happened... at a lose, thanks
Gearbox may be worn There's two places on the 'shift rod' under the tunnel that wears out. It's probably the shifter 'shift coupler' or the 'shift rod bushing' under the gear shift. Pick up the "Bentley" Bug manual for your year and it will tell you how to do it. Kinduv a pain but still do-able.
you need to let the car warm up longer
Yes, a parallel sided screw thread is in effect a worm gear.
What are the two d's on the gear shift for>
2500 ml engine oil, 3000 ml gear oil, and however much brake fluid will go in it.
Yep, then shift from second to third gear.
It's prolly the brake shift interlock switch if it has one, that used to happed to my girlfriends Beetle. It tells the transmission that you have your foot on the brake and won't let you put it in gear until you do. check and see if it has one then test it. Hope that helps
