Tokyo is in the Japan Standard Time (JST) which has no Daylight Savings Time (DST). Los Angeles does have DST, so during DST, it is in the Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, 1 hour ahead) and without DST it is in the Pacific Standard Time (PST).

During PDT Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles. When it is 1200 (noon) in Los Angeles on Monday, it is 0400 (4 AM) in Tokyo on Tuesday.

During PST, Tokyo is 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles. When it is 1200 (noon) in Los Angeles on Monday, it is 0500 (5 AM) in Tokyo on Tuesday.

FYI, Japan does not use AM or PM, they use standard time (also known as Military time).

Short question; long answer! As you travel westwards from LA the time changes -- you deduct one hour -- for each 15 degrees of longitude that you go through. When you reach the International Date Line, you ADD 24 hours to your clock -- that is, you gain one whole day. As you continue westwards from there you keep deducting one hour. Let me give an example... For instance, if you travel at the speed of light -- like, almost instantaneously -- and you leave from LA at 12 noon on Thursday then for every 15 degrees of longitude you would change your clock backwards {to 11 AM, 10 AM, 9 AM (etc)} until reaching Japan where the time would be 5 AM -- But 5 AM on Saturday! Once again: 12 Noon Friday in LA = 5 AM Saturday in Japan. The International Date Line is located at roughly at 180 degrees (West or East) longitude -- roughly opposite from Greenwich, England which is at zero degrees longitude. On a world clock it's roughly 3 hours east of Japan and 4 hours west of Califonia. I say "roughly" because the Date Line isn't straight -- it zigzags around islands or even huge areas of the Pacific Ocean, depending upon the local governments or some of the major powers. (Like the UK, Russia, the USA, etc.) See the US Navy Related Link below and scroll down it for a map of the Pacific Ocean and the International Date Line; Also see the world map on the World Times Zones website.
