The "dhow" is an Arabian (Persian) Gulf sail boat, used for carrying goods between local Gulf ports and as far south as Tanzania, Djibouti, and Yemen and east to Pakistan and Iran.

Most of the "dhows" are motorised these days, but they also rely on a single central triangular sail. Accommodation is basic because of the short journeys involved. They are not used as fishing boats.

The shallow draft of the "dhow" allows it to dock at fairly basic jetties.

I assume the tip of the "dhow" is the projecting timber aft also used to tie sail ropes to.
