Top Dead Center (TDC) means when the number 1 piston is at the top of the cylinder on the compression stroke. One way to find TDC is to (1)disconnect the negative battery cable, (2)remove the number 1 spark plug, (3)while turning crankshaft clockwise with a wrench or breaker bar, insert the tip of your finger in the spark plug hole until you feel pressure building up, then insert a pencil or pen to feel when the piston reaches the very top of the cylinder. Another way to find TDC is to remove the distributer cap and rotate the engine clockwise until the rotor points to number one spark plug wire and the pointers on the crankshaft align. To me, the surest way is the finger tip method.
