This really varies from motor to motor. Not all 6 cylinders are equal. if you get an older six cylinder it probably would be able to haul much more than 4,000lbs. But that is not the only factor. Gears can play a big role to, like an example of this would be the Ford Ranger, it has terrible towing capacity, but if you throw in a posi along with a 4.10 or 3.73 it will perform better along with reduced fuel economy.
6 cylinder = 0-4,500ish lbs
If you want better towing get a V8 pickup truck. Silverado, Sierra, and Tundra are awesome workhorses, F150 is great too just be weary of triton engines and rearend issues.
8 cylinder = 5,000-12,000ish lbs
If you want the best towing get a turbo diesel pickup. Duramax is great. Cummins I6 & V8 engines are the best, producing massive amounts of torque. Powerstroke is good if you like carbon buildup in the turbos. Turbo diesels get better fuel economy than gasoline vehichles. Cummins piston rings are strong as nails.
turbo diesels = 10,000-20,000ish lbs
hope this helps
