A:YHVH is the Hebrew Tetragrammaton, an early Hebrew name for God. Because linguists believe that the vav ('V') was normally pronounced 'W' in ancient Hebrew, the Tetragrammaton is more usually rendered as YHWH. Many scholars prefer to call the third letter 'waw', rather than the modern equivalent, 'vav'.

Because ancient Hebrew writing provided little information about included vowels, scholars do not know what vowels formed part of the word, and therefore can only speculate as to what meaning, if any, it had other than a name for God. They believe it was pronounced "Yahweh".

In English, the Tetragrammaton is often simply written as Yahweh, but a common alternative translation is Jehovah.
