FireWire is a high-speed serial bus. It is commonly used in higher-end digital cameras and external hard drives to allow for data to be transferred between them more quickly. However, FireWire can be used for almost any purpose, including scanners, networking, printers, and Musical Instruments.
A firewire port is typically used for connecting some audiovisual devices (video cameras) to a computer. It cal also be used to build a computer network (which is very rare). Now, firewire is loosing its popularity to USB 2.0/3.0 connections.
Firewire is faster and more reliable than USB and equivalent in price to USB. However, USB is more widely used in PC's.
