Trichomes are plant hairs composed of one or more cells that serve multiple purposes, including discouraging insect predators, reflecting sunlight, and insulating the plant body. A nettleâ??s trichomes, for instance, irritate the skin of a person who touches the leaf.
The epidermal hairs on a plant are known as trichomes. They may have any number of functions including deterring herbivores, protection from frost, wind, and harsh sunshine, as well as taking advantage of fog drip.
The lower epidermal layer of leaf has many holes (stomata) in it and guard cells surrounding these holes. In the roots the epidermis has many root hairs growing out of it or regions of dead root hairs where over time the roots have grown longer and the old root hairs are no longer needed to capture water. In the upper epidermis of a leaf you would see palisade cells just beneath the epidermal layer and a waxy cuticle just above.
