I'm going to assume that the location is the same for a 1973 Mercedes 450 SLC. There is a fuse compartment in the passenger side kick-panel...remove the kick-panel and you'll see several relays. The fuel pump relay is in the upper left. When turning the ignition to the second position you should be able to hear a click from the relay even with the kick-panel in place.

How do you open the hood of a 1980 Mercedes slc 450?
There is a pull\slide type lever in the kick panel on the bottom left side. Once you pull that the the hood should pop up. There is a safety catch on the inside left of the Mercedes emblem that is kind hard to see if you don't know its there. It will be on the top left side & just squeeze it, pull it towards grill & lift hood. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about the location for your 300SD, but I have a 1979 450 SLC and the fuse box is located underneath the dash on the passenger's side -- to the right of where the passenger would place his feet. The fuse box diagram should be glued to the back of the door that opens to the fuse box.
