If it's a little bigger than a quarter, with a picture of James Garfield on one side and the Statue of Liberty on the other, then it's actually a 2011 presidential dollar coin, worth one dollar.

Any actual circulating gold coins from the 1880s specify a denomination on the back, though some of them were abbreviated (such as 10 D. for ten dollars).
