Assuming you have a junk Mercury or Roosevelt dime dated up to 1964, its retail metal value would be about $1.35 as of 09/2010. Of course a dealer will pay wholesale so you'd probably get around $1 for it, best case, and less if it's heavily worn.

These coins weighed 2.5 gm when new and were made of 90% silver. That means it contains 2.25 gm of silver.

What are the rare years for Roosevelt dimes?

There really aren't any rare years/mintmarks and all sell for scrap silver in circulated grades. The lowest mintage Roosevelt dime was the 1955 dime with a bit more than 12 million made, however this coin is still very common and if you hunt through a dealer's junk silver you can pick up an example for ~$2.50-3, which is about the value of the silver. There is the 1996-W which was not intended for circulation but has a mintage of about 1.5 million but was released in the 1996 uncirculated mint set but the entire 1996 mint set can be found for cheap.

Is junk silver a good investment?

Junk silver is my personal favorite, especially the quarters and dimes. There's others as well - Kennedy half dollars or other currency that was commonly used. Junk silver was in fact 'currency' prior to 1964. Some of the Kennedy's contained 40% silver thru the early 70s but other junk silver coins are 90% silver. If you think silver is a good investment, junk silver is a great way to stay close to the spot price. So it's an inexpensive way to own silver, it's recognized everywhere so it's easily exchanged, and it comes in fractional denominations making it simple to monetize. In my opinion, everyone should own some junk silver. Silver has real value that will never go away, or at least it hasn't for most of history. Paper, especially fiat currency will not always have value. It's amazing how U.S. fiat currency has declined since the mid-60s. In 1964, a 90% silver quarter was $0.25. Today, it costs around $6.50 to buy one! There are a lot of ways to get your hands on Junk Silver, or 90% as some call it. I have purchased all of mine online with no problems.

What is the value of scrap sterling silver?

"Junk" silver is the term used by investors and coin dealers to refer to pre-1965 US silver quarters, dimes and half dollars that are worn or are common dates and have no value above the silver content in them. At the time of writing, a silver dime is worth about $2.50, a silver quarter is worth about $6.25 and a silver half dollar is worth about $12.75. However, the prices depend on the price of silver.

How many ounces of silver are there in a 1000 face value bad of junk silver?

There are approximately 723.4 troy ounces of silver in $1000 face value of pre-1965 US silver coins (dimes, quarters, and half dollars - the answer for silver dollars would actually be a bit higher). This number assumes that the coins are in uncirculated condition, or very close to it, which the phrase "bad junk silver" implies is not the case. If the coins are badly worn (that is, a little of the metal from each coin is worn away), you could have as little as 700 troy ounces.

What is the value of an 1882 Morgan dollar with gold on the eagle side no mint Mark and gold face on the obverse with silver background?

Coins like this have no numismatic value because they have been altered. The added gold was not done by the U.S. Mint. Most dealers buy them as "Junk Silver" to be melted. The silver value as of today is about $17.00.

What price is scrap silver?

Depends on the coin. Some coins are primarily collector coins and they've got values beyond their silver content, other coins are known as "junk silver" and sell about for melt value. For US 90% silver coins (quarters, dimes, half dollars and dollars dated 1964 and earlier) a good rule of thumb is that you'll pay anywhere from 20-25 times face value for a junk silver coin. For example, you can expect to pay $2-2.50 for a junk silver dime. There are also 1965-1970 dated Kennedy half dollars, these are 40% silver and can usually be bought for about $5 a piece retail. There are also 35% silver "war nickels" which are dated 1942-1945 (with a large mintmark over the Monticello) these coins will often sell for $1.50-2 or so retail.

What are some popular silver dollar coins?

There's many out there but the most popular are probably the 1-oz American Silver Eagle or 1-oz Canadian Maple..I believe those have a $5 face value though but I may be mistaken. Of course, 90% junk silver quarters are great too but you need to have 4 of those to make a $1 face value.
