Assuming the coin is circulated and has no mintmark, the 1898 Liberty Head Double Eagle is considered common in circulated grades. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values as of 9-8-11 for low grade coins are $2,150.00-$2,200.00, better grade are $2,230.00-$2,240.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $2,260.00-$2,290.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelry or have been cleaned have little or no value to a collector or dealer

Check the back of the coin for an S or CC mint mark.

If there is no mint mark you'll need to have the coin evaluated by a skilled appraiser because it ma be a counterfeit - only 571 1882 double eagles were struck in Philadelphia that year and they're considered to be extremely rare. If it does have an S or CC, Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 02/2010:

"CC" mint mark (Carson City):

Very worn condition - $1,500

Moderately worn - $1,720

Slightly worn - $1,880

Almost no wear - $3,388

Uncirculated - $9,690 to $22,750 depending on quality

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn condition - $1,320

Moderately worn - $1,360

Slightly worn - $1,380

Almost no wear - $1,466

Uncirculated - $2,000 to $20,050
