If it appears to be an old coin about the size of a half-dollar you should take it to a coin dealer for authentication, but it's about 99.9% certain to be a modern fake. The Colony of New York never issued its own coinage, and very few genuine pieces from the days of Dutch ownership are known to exist.

If it's a modern Lincoln cent with "NY" and/or an outline of New York State on it, you have a novelty item made by a private company, not a US Mint issue. They used a metal punch to add the state's image to a genuine penny. You can buy entire sets from hobby and novelty shops for a few dollars. Some people collect complete sets, but an individual coin without its holder is nothing more than a curiosity piece with no extra value.
