It depends on what your hunting, moose, bear, rabbit, birds. Hunting large animals I suggest a large caliber rifle. Most hunters in Alaska also carry a large caliber handgun (.357, .41 Mag, 44 Mag.) even if they are hunting small game of fishing. It depends on what your hunting, moose, bear, rabbit, birds. Normally a 600-700 fps air rifle will kill a rabbit at around 30-40 yards away. So this will include a .22 caliber air rifle or if your looking for something with less power that will just kill birds, try looking for a .177 or .20 caliber air rifle but if you are looking to hunt game like rabbits go for .22
The main fault for the pyramid of numbers is to equate the mass of 2 organisims for example 1g of rabbit to 1g of mouse
.22 caliber pellet guns and .22 caliber firearms are intended for target shooting. The .22 firearms can be used for small game- rabbit and squirrel come to mind- but in most areas are NOT legal for big game- deer and similar animals.
Myxomotosis is a disease that first appeared in the UK in 1954. It is the only mammal that is affected. It is a viral infection passed on to the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) by fleas (spilopsyllus) who feed on the blood of the host rabbit. The rabbit dies a gruesome death within around 12 days of being infected. The disease spread rapidly in the UK during the 1950s and reduced rabbit numbers by as much as 90% . To a large extent the disease has now died out as the rabbit numbers were depleted and to some extent the species has remained generally in balance with nature ever since. A detailed account of the subject can be found in RM Lockleys excellent book "The Private Life of the Rabbit" first published by Andre Deutsch in 1964.
