Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter. It may be blank or there may be a D.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 08/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $138

Moderately worn - $180

Slightly worn - $252

Almost no wear - $288

Uncirculated - $400 to $17,230 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Dahlonega, GA):

Very worn - $3,180

Moderately worn - $5,820

Slightly worn - $9,190

Almost no wear - $30,504

Uncirculated - $56,880 to $171,880

Any 1861-D gold dollar should be inspected by a trained expert to make sure it's not a counterfeit.

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
