You have to consider that a book like Tom Sawyer has been in huge circulation for many years, and has been reprinted many thousands of times. It's possible to have a copy that is particularly old, and even particularly attractive and it not be worth more than ten or twenty dollars. There are just somany copies out there. I tell you this just so that you don;t have your hopes too high. While it's possible you could have a first edition of the book, it is highly unlikely.
What makes it even trickier is that facsimile editions of the original book were published and sold recently.
A first edition will have blue cloth covers with gilt writing. The publisher was American Publishing Co. in Hartford.

The value of a hardcover art-type edition of Tom Sawyer published by Books Inc Publishers in Boston and New York with a preface dated Hartford 1876 can vary widely depending on its condition, rarity, and any unique features it may have. To determine an accurate value, it is recommended to consult with rare book dealers or auction houses specializing in antique books.
Hi. Just letting you know I have this same book and it's actually a set of NINE books. the 1876 noted is NOT the copyright. That is just the date the author wrote the original story. The Tom Sawyer you have has been re published over and over. I believe this book is from about 1936 and probably worth $10.
