The Amazon basin is part of South America that is drained by the Amazon River. The basin covers approximately 40% of the South American continent with a total area of over 2,600,000 square miles. Eight countries have part or all of their territory within the basin: Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, though the majority of the basin is located in Amazonia in Brazil.

The Amazon River is the longest river in the world, has the greatest volume of any river, and is located in South America. The river (and its basin) is mainly in Brazil, but also in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
