The Vice President has the power to break a tie vote in the Senate. This is the only actual power he has and on occasion it has been important. His real function is to be able to seamlessly step into the Presidency if something happens to the President. It is not really a job and there is not much he needs to do to prepare since it will probably never happen, but if its does, it is tremendously important.
The main duty or job for the President of the United States is to be President of the senate. His main reason for office is to take over as president if the presidency becomes vacant.
The vice president's most important role is to be ready at all times to assume the presidency if the president, for various reasons, can no longer perform those duties.
While all is well with the President, the Vice President's primary job as President of the Senate makes him part of the legislative branch. If anything happens to the President requiring the Vice President to step in to take his/her place, whether temporarily or permanently, he becomes part of the executive branch.
The Presidential Candidate's main purpose in picking the Vice President is "balancing the ticket." To "balance the ticket" is to find a VP Candidate that deposits values into a Presidential campaign that will bring support from voters that were not previously inclined to vote for that candidate. In most every United States presidential election within the past 30 years, the presidential candidate chose a VP candidate with almost opposite views and beliefs so that they might hoard the votes.
The president's job is to see that people enforce the law which are created by the Legislature and The Judicial Branch. They make sure that the president does his job correctly.

The Vice President really doesn't have much of a job, but to be there if needed when/if the president dies.

If the president dies or resigns, the vice president takes over his job for the remaining years/job.
When a president dies, it is important for someone to take his place. That should be the vice president. However, if an attack happened and the vice president dies with the president, there is a protocol for who gets the job next. That person has to have the nuclear launch codes and needs to take charge of the military. A president has a big job and someone needs to be our leader.
Vice-President Vice-Executive
The job duties of the vice president are largely left up to the president. The vice-president actually has one official duty and that is president of the Senate.
John Adams was one of America's founding fathers and is remembered best for his job as US president, being the second US president. He also served as the first US vice president which helped prepare him to be later the US President. It should be remembered that the entire government system was new. So unlike today, where some do not believe the job of vice president is important, back in 1792, it was an important position.
