You should be asking, 'What is the potential reading of a positive wire....?', as 'voltage' means 'potential difference' and you can't have a potential difference on a wire! The positive wire has a potential difference of +110 V with respect to the negative wire.

What causes a 220v wire to pull only 110v?

The fact that it's supposed to. Voltage is stated as the difference between the two wires carrying electricity to the load. When they bring power to the house from the utility, you get two wires carrying 110v but they're 180 degrees out of phase. Imagine one carries positive 110v and the other carries negative 110v. If you hook one of these wires plus a neutral (zero volts) to the load, you get 110v--110v over 0v. If you hook both of them to the load, you get positive 110v over negative 110v, or 220v. So...red to white is 110v, black to white is 110v, red to black is 220v.

How do you measure the voltage on a car alternator?

get a multi meter that reads dc voltage & touch the black (negative -) wire to the negative battery post & the red (positive +) wire to the positive battery post with car running. car off is battery voltage, car on is alternator voltage.

Why does a rectifier diode is not operated in breakdown voltage?

The breakdown voltage of a diode is the minimum voltage at which it conducts in both directions. If you have a 100-volt rectifier diode (1N4002) and you wire it into a 110v circuit, it will flow current in both directions and you'll get no rectification.

How many times can a 110v line be split without voltage drop?

A splice has a minor additional resistance associated with it, but the main reason for voltage drop will be length. The smaller the wire diameter, the higher the resistance per unit length. The type wire such as stranded or solid or copper and aluminum also contribute to voltage loss in various ways.

What causes an error in reading a voltmeter?

It could be when the positive wire is plugged in the negative slot and the negative wire is plugged in the positive slot. This can make the readings negative.

What green wire is positive and what green wire is negative?

Normally a green wire is never used as a positive connection. It is almost always a ground or negative wire. Take a multimeter and check both wires. Set the multimeter to the DC voltage setting and check each wire. If one of them has voltage it will show up. Now set the multimeter to ohms and check the other wire. If it is a ground wire you will see the meter register.

What is the significance of obtaining a negative reading in testing voltage?

Electric current can flow in one of two directions in a wire; with alternating current, the direction changes continually, back and forth. The use of positive and negative values for voltage gives you a direction for the voltage. If current flowing to the right is positive, then current flowing to the left is negative.============================Answer #2:A negative reading indicates that the point to which the positive probe ofthe voltmeter is connected is at a lower potential than the point to whichthe negative meter probe is connected. It tells nothing about the circuitconditions except in combination with the knowledge of how the meteris connected.

What is the ac voltage reading between the bare copper wire and the hot black wire 120 vac or zero volt?

Should be about 120 VAC.

240v box outside for a hot tub you need a 110v receptacle Can you wire it off the 240v box?

Using a box that is hire voltage than what you need can cause a short, and even a fire. So using a 240V box, when all you need is a 110v receptacle, wouldn't be a good idea.

110v electrical wire color code for construction site?

black

Is red wire the positive wire?

YesCaveatIn general, when working with DC, the red wire is positive and the black wire is negative. In the US and Canada, when working with AC, the colored wires (red, black...) are "hot", the white wire is neutral and the green or bare wire is ground.Note that the above is NOT a requirement for "switch legs".
