It is not often that Lake Eyre has any substantial quantity of water in it. The last time it was nearly full was 1989, and that was from local rain.

Alternatively, water from Queensland filters down through the Channel country and into Lake Eyre. The last time this method filled the lake was 1974 to 1976.

When it does have water in it, the water gradually dissolves the salt crust and the water becomes more salty than sea water over a period of time, which kills all of the fish, the water then evaporates and redeposits the salt.

The expense of building a desalination plant at Lake Eyre, given its remoteness, and the remote chance of there being sufficient water to justify a desalination plant on a regular basis, probably makes it a non-cost effective proposition.

The water in Lake Eyre, South Australia, is not used by humans for any purpose, as it is too salty. Sailing used to be permitted on Lake Eyre on the rare occasions the lake had enough water in it, but sailing is no longer allowed.
