Yes, it can. A completely dead battery can blow the alternator diodes, at least in older systems - I am not so certain about newer systems, whether or not they are protected against this annoyance. In any case, the alternator is not generally designed to charge a battery from scratch, but just to keep it charged during normal use. The alternator will not be completely ruined, but it will not function until the diodes are replaced.
Its good for it. Any device with a chargible battery is better off letting the battery run all the way down before a recharge due to the fact that battery's in general have a certain ammount of charges they can do before it gets worn out. So yes, it is good to charge a completely dead battery then starting to charge half way.

I'm not completely sure, but I do know that my father in laws nickname was Guta and it was never clear why he was called by that. His name WAS Gustavo so we believe it was a slang mix of his name and a Spanish affectionate term! But I would really love to know if it has actual meaning which i believe there wasn't any certain Spanish word that it completely derived from.
