1st year Smokejumpers make $14.23 an hour (GS-5) but many make 16 dollars an hour. However, you have to add in overtime and "hazard pay", plus the fact that it is often a "seasonal" job. A foreman may make $24 an hour.
Overtime is an added half, so that would make it $20 an hour if $16 were the base pay (which may vary from one country to another).
Hazard pay adds another $4 per hour (25 percent) for EACH type of hazard.
For example:
Working on steep terrain.
Working on an uncontrolled fire.
Working at night.
On a typical jump, you'd have all of these, plus overtime for anything beyond 8 hours. So, if your shift is "over" at 4 PM and you were to jump an uncontrolled fire at 2 PM and work all night (then go home to rest), you'd have made 8 hours straight pay, 16 hours of OT, 16 hours hazpay for the steep terrain, 16 hazpay for the uncontrolled fire, and 12 hours hazpay for the night work.
Total: $1,392 for 24 hours of work. Multiply that by 85 days in a busy season and you find yet another thrill of being a smokejumper. You also get paid an "allowance" for each day you're not able to return to home base, including three meals, a place to sleep and some spending money.
