Even during the 1940s, aircraft carrier technology advanced rapidy. Radar was either introduced and improved significantly, as was damage control and offensive/defensive armament. By the 1950s, aircraft carriers were able to handle jet aircraft. 1980s standard carriers had the advantages of nuclear power (increasing endurance), sophisticated missile defense technology and catapults.

What aircraft were flown from escort carriers and what was there role?

Escort carriers (aka Jeep Carriers, Baby Flat-tops) carried the same type of aircraft as the light and fleet carriers did: Fighters (Wildcats & Hellcats); torpedo planes (Avengers); and dive bombers (Dauntless & Helldivers). Escorts simply carried about 30 airplanes compared to 50 plus planes for light carriers and 90 plus planes for fleet carriers. In the Atlantic, subs were the primary prey; and Escort Carriers (along with Escort Destroyers) spent their times hunting submarines. Escort Destroyers were smaller than regular US Navy destroyers, and also spent most of their duties in the Atlantic theater. In the Pacific, the large carriers and large destroyers took on the IJN. But USN destroyer escorts and escort carriers also fought in the Pacific, supplimenting USN firepower. For example: the destroyer ESCORT "Samual B. Roberts" was sunk while charging an IJN Cruiser at Leyte Gulf. The ESCORT Carrier "USS Bismarck Sea" was the last USN aircraft carrier sunk in WWII; during the Battle for Iwo Jima (where the US Marines raised the flag).

What is the newest aircraft carrier?

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- Advance construction started on the nation's newest aircraft carrier Feb. 25 with a "first cut of steel" ceremony at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Newport News, Va. The steel plate cut will be used in the construction of the carrier, which has yet to be named, but will be designated CVN 79. The carrier represents the second in a new class of ships designed to replace Enterprise and Nimitz-class carriers and save more than $5 billion in total ownership costs during its planned 50-year service life when compared to Nimitz-class carriers. "Today we mark the beginning of the advance construction of CVN 79, second of the Gerald R. Ford-class of aircraft carriers," said Rear Adm. Michael McMahon, Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Aircraft Carriers. "It's an important step in continuing carrier construction using advanced technologies and efficiencies to reduce both ownership and procurement cost in this new class of carriers." Ford-class aircraft carriers, while retaining the same hull form as the Nimitz class, contain several advanced technology systems including Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching Systems, advanced arresting gear, dual band radar, a redesigned smaller island and a new propulsion plant. The first ship in the class, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), is also under construction at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News and is scheduled to be delivered to the fleet in September 2015. The PEO for Aircraft Carriers, an affiliated PEO of Naval Sea Systems Command, focuses on the design, construction, system integration, delivery and life-cycle support of all aircraft carriers. What is groundspeed of the aircraft?

Ground speed is the speed the aircraft has compared to the ground. This is usually different from air speed, which is the aircraft's speed compared to the surrounding air. Thus an aircraft with 400 kph air speed and 50 kph headwind has a ground speed of 350 kph. For fun: with light aircraft with very low stall speeds it's possible to fly backwards (compared to the ground) if they fly into a headwind that's stronger than their lowest stall speed. I.e. their ground speed is negative.

Who died in the Battle of Midway?

This was a lopsided battle. The US lost about 300 killed compared to the 3000 estimated to have been killed among the Japanese Flee. Yamamoto lost four carriers and Nimitz lost one. The US entered the fray with about 350 aircraft and lost almost 100 compared to Japanese losses of 225 Fleet aircraft of the 250 they brought to Midway. The biggest scare to Japan's war planners was that this had happened only six months after their big win at Pearl Harbor.

What was the aim of the zeppelins?

The theory of airships in general was to provide a lifting body that could carry passengers in reasonable comfort and speed cheaply ( compared to winged aircraft. ) The Zeppelins were supremely efficient airships for their day. The US Navy liked this idea in the late 1920's and had 2 airships made as flying aircraft carriers. They were almost as big as the largest Zeppelin, Hindenburg, and could carry, launch and retrieve 5 fighter aircraft each.

Indicated airspeed compared to ground speed?

Indicated airspeed compared to ground speed are different due to the movement of air (winds) around the aircraft.
