Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare but serious illness caused when bacteria are allowed to multiply in or near damaged tissue, certain strains of bacteria can produce TSST-1 toxins which enter the body and if the person lacks immunity it will overwhelm the immune system result in something similar to septic shock. TSS is most commonly associated with tampons as a result of a TSS outbreak in the 1980's caused by highly absorbent tampons.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is when certain strains of bacteria are allowed to multiply near wounds and start to produce toxins. These toxins enter the body and if a person lacks immunity they will overwhelm the immune system leading to low blood pressure and high fever, eventually onto organ failure. TSS can be mild, presenting like a bad case of the flu, or it can be more serious so result in ICU care with victims being left with long-term health problems or death.
