The Tarbela Dam is a large dam in Pakistan and was finished in 1974 and designed to store water from the Indus River for irrigation and flood control and generation of hydroelectric power.
What is unique about it is because the source of the Indus River is the monsoon rainfall in the Himalayas, the river contains huge amounts of sediment.
The yearly suspended sediment load is 430 million ton per year, which means over time the dam will fill in. The dam's estimated life span is 50 years, so since it was built in 1974 you're looking at 2030 the dam will be full of sediment.
However, sedimentation is predicted to be slower than they thought so you are looking at 2060 it will be full of sediment which the life span will be 85 years.

Who built Itaipu dam?
When a dam is to be built, a diversion tunnel is usually bored through solid rock next to the dam site to bypass the dam construction site. The dam is built while the river flows through the diversion tunnel.
