I would "start" with the ignition key switch/cylinder in the steering column.

Are you running the A/C at the same time? Is the engine cold or hot ?tell me first, there may be a couple of things wrong.

If your car has the check engine on it could be your fuel pressure regulator located on your fuel rail..
You need to replace your spark plug wires!! You can check this by spraying water on your spark plug wires when it is dark. Then start your engine and you should see the wires arc and your engine will be running rough just as it does when it rains or after a rain. Good Luck
On an interference engine you can have internal engine damage when you attempt to start it. On a noninterference engine it may not start or it may backfire, or miss, if it does start.
Fuel pump
That's the computer's way of telling you that something is wrong and it wants you to read the diagnostic code.
