Normally the alternator is defective. It can also be a loose alternator drive belt, or defective voltage regulator.
Faulty Alternator?
on my old 1.2 clio the battery light came on as there was fault with the alternator and it needed replacing. As far as i know the battery light comes on when the battery is not charging or there is a fault with the battery.
The light comes on when there is a problem with the charging system. Normally this means the alternator is defective.

First off you posted this in the wrong section. lol Anyway the light usually comes on when the alternator is no longer charging the battery while driving, most likely it means that either the battery has low voltage or your alternator is becoming a little faulty.
you have a short where negative is touching the metal of the car or it is grounded inproperly
