The white Southerners were convinced that slavery was necessary to their well being and their way of life. The believed that The Bible recognized slavery and, in truth, it had been an accepted form of labor for thousands of years all over the world. They also argued that by making slaves Christians they were saving souls and that the Northern factory worker were not as well off as slaves ( this came up recently in one political sound bite). They also stated that slaves were fed, clothed, and given shelter and that slavery was a "positive good" for the slave. Slaves were needed to do the work and were inferior to whites and they needed protection and guidance. Their whole way of economic and agricultural life depended on slavery.

Additional: It is less well known that prior to the War Between the States, the institution of slavery was rather widespread in the so-called "northern" states as well.

Why did some southern states start a new country?

Some Southern States in the United States (pre-civil war era) wanted to start a new country because the North wouldn't allow slavery and was pushing the anti-slavery concept on the South. So, if the Southern states became a new country, the North couldn't tell them what to do. Of course, they never did actually start a new country because the secession of some states was unreasonable and not justified (according to the North).
