The New York City Draft Riots took place from July 13 to July 16 of 1863. When US Army recruiters began the conscription process in the city, large crowds of immigrant workers among other NYC citizens, staged the largest civil insurrection in US history. Much of th crowds hatred was turned against Blacks, as these innocent people were, in the minds of many rioters, one reason there was a US Civil War. Also, because wealthy shipping owners and dock managers often hired Blacks as "strike breakers" against immigrant workers, the angry crowds attacked Blacks on the streets of the city.

Only 20,000 troops sent from Gettysburg used force, including howitzers, to end the riots.
