You *MUST* use Dextron VI on transmissions manufactured after 2007, unless you do a full flush of the whole transmission, torque converter, high and low pressure coolant lines, and the cooler.. Dextron III can damage the clutch-packs of older transmissions and it isn't recommended. Mixing isn't recommended either - as you will affect the slip-coefficent of the final product.
The transmission may be advertised as "sealed for life". But that is a load of bollocks. If you want to replace the unit after 250,000Kms - fine. But if you want it to last the life of the car? Change it at 90,000Km intervals by using the pump-out method.

Kind of, there's no actual transmission fluid, however another fluid, normally Gearbox oil sometimes has to be added.
You can use any SAE certified transmission fluid in your 1998 Ford escort manual transmission. Make sure the transmission fluid is for your manual transmission and not an automatic transmission.
