Its body is similar to a bee, and the wings are shaped like a moth. I know it is not a dragonfly.
A mosquito, bee or any insect that has wings and a stinger.
Bees have only one stinger. The stinger is barbed, so after stinging, the bee tries to pull away, ripping out it's stinger and a few intestines, effectively killing the kamikaze insect.
A black flying insect that burrows into wood is the carpenter bee. The female carpenter bees are the only ones with a stinger.
They die because when they fly off after delivering the sting, some internal organs are ripped out of the insect. The barbed stinger remains in the victim, and the stinger is attached to organs inside the bee.

Dragonflies often times have metallic black wings that shimmer in the daylight. They can have red bodies and do not have stingers.
